[intro]

I am a research scientist in the Center for Computational Science (CCS), U of Miami since July 2008. I have a secondary appointment as a Research Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Dept. of UM, and I am also affiliated with the Center for Computational Biomedicine, Imaging and Modeling, at Rutgers University.

During the period Jan 2007 -- Jul 2008, I was a visiting Assistant Professor in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, at University of Miami. Prior to that (Nov 2003 -- Dec 2006) I worked as research fellow with Prof. Dimitris Metaxas, in the Center for Computational Biomedicine Imaging and Modeling (CBIM), at Rutgers University, NJ. I received my PhD degree in Computer and Information Sciences from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece, in June 2003, and my B.S. degree    in Electrical and Computer Engineering also from NTUA, in February 1999.

My research is focused on computer vision, machine learning, biomedical image analysis, and computational biology. Specifically, my current interests are in (i) image segmentation using deformable models and learning-based classification methods, (ii) combining generative and discriminative models for articulated object tracking, (iii) object detection and recognition of multiple objects from multiple classes in clutter and under occlusion, (iv) medical image computing, and (v) feature extraction and pattern analysis in biological problems.

Research Statement: Visual Information Translation Analysis & Learning

I conduct both theoretical and applied research in the areas of computer vision, image processing, machine learning, biomedical data analysis, and computational biology. My goal is to develop novel fully automated methods that can provide robustness, accuracy and computational efficiency. I am working towards finding better solutions to existing open problems in the above areas, as well as exploring different scientific fields where my research can provide useful interpretation, quantification and modeling. In general, my research is focused on combining bottom-up with top-down approaches for domain knowledge extraction.

To see some of my recent projects, go there.
